Restoration
Overgrown and with a partially collapsed roof, the 200 year old derelict grade B listed building was close to being lost forever.
In 2019, Mark Stanford, recognising the historical importance of the Wellhouse, purchased the dilapidated structure with the intent of restoring it to its former glory. In doing so, the Wellhouse has been saved from certain demolition.
Helped by a team of fellow volunteers with a shared passion for industrial heritage, history and conservation, the Wellhouse has been transformed from a crumbling wreck to a faithful representation of how the building would have looked 200 years ago.
This work has involved:
-
Felling and clearing trees overgrowing the site
-
Redevelopment of the grounds as a garden for public use
-
Complete removal and replacement of roof
-
Removal of unsightly pebbledash render
-
Repointing stonework with lime
-
Replacing stone lintels
-
Reinstatement of electricity
-
Reinstating 14 levels of ladders and staging down 120ft mine shaft
