Bridge of Allan Wellhouse
1821-2022
Wee building, big history
Without it, Bridge of Allan wouldn't be the town it is today!
Built in 1821, the Wellhouse was used to pump the mineral rich waters collected from underground springs in the ancient copper mine 120ft below ground. Prized for supposed medicinal qualities, the water was raised to the surface via the old mine shaft on which the Wellhouse is built.
The water, used for bathing and consumption, drew Victorian visitors from far and wide. This increase in visitors led to the construction of the adjacent Allan Water Hotel, the subsequent development of the surrounding area and official status of Bridge of Allan as a spa town.
